The municipality of Vaala has approved Vetyalfa’s green hydrogen refinery zoning initiative

The zoning initiative for a green hydrogen refinery submitted by Vetyalfa Oy was unanimously approved at the municipal council on 26 September 2024. The project will be subject to at least a city plan and, if necessary, a component master plan.

The project will involve the construction of a hydrogen separation and synthetic downstream processing plant with a maximum capacity of around 1000 MW based on renewable energy. A further 200MWp solar power production area is planned. More information here.

The project will be subject to an EIA (environmental impact assessment) procedure in principle, as well as environmental, water, building and chemical safety permits.

The preparation of the draft plan for the hydrogen refinery project and the environmental impact assessment procedure are expected to start in early 2025.
